This is definitely one of the highlights of this year’s Arts Festival. I find the treatment of the theme very engaging. Indeed, the intertextual references to The Legend of the Purple Hairpin, with the emphasis on a sense of loyalty, allow the audience to re-examine a very old problem from a refreshing perspective.

However, I am not so sure about how the three-part structure – the “drama in a drama in a drama” mentioned in the programme notes actually works. My question is about how the two contemporary groups can be related to each other – it just seems to me that there isn’t a clear connection between the two. Kelvin, Jade and the insurance guy seem to share the same time and space with the group of unnamed contemporary characters (as they appear at the same bar in the scene where Ian Wong is introduced), yet both of the groups show no awareness of the presence of the other. Does it suggest that, unbeknown to the group of characters who talk about the Cantonese opera and their own problems with love, a love affair which parallels the one depicted in The Legend of the Purple Hairpin can still take place in these days? But I can’t help thinking whether the plot would be made tighter if the relationship between the two groups could be established in some ways. Still, this remains an impressive achievement and I hope that there will be a second performance in Hong Kong later.
